Learners as Leaders
Giving the learners in Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan the opportunity to develop leadership skills is a really important part of our work.
We try to ensure that all learners get the opportunity to lead teams inside and outside the classroom. We know that the opportunity to practice and develop these skills is a really important part of the education we offer.
Some of the groups of learners who lead elements of the schools work are shown below. We have also tried to highlight the areas of the school and the wider community that they influence.

Who: Two representatives from the Sixth Form who attend all Full Governing Body Meetings in the school with the Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team and full complement of Governors. They are also the leaders of the School Council.
Purpose: To ensure that the Governing Body are fully informed of the learners perspective on any decisions that are made.

The Sixth Form Leadership Team | |

Who: Six learners from the Sixth Form who applied and successfully interviewed for the role who meet regularly with the Head Teacher and Head of Sixth Form.
Purpose: To play an active role in the continuing improvement of the sixth form by ensuring that the views of learners are central to any decisions taken.

The School Council | |

Who: The School council is split into year group council and whole school council. Two learners are nominated as form reps, these reps will then sit on the year council and meet termly with Pastoral Leader, feeding information to and from the form class. From the year council two learners are nominated to sit on the whole school council, these reps feed information back and forth to year council and whole concil.
Purpose: To ensure learners have a voice that is valued and appreciated. All learners’ ideas can be put forward in an open forum for discussion.

Who:
Purpose: Identify opportunities to improve the school environment and enable the school to operate sustainably. Implement any actions required to improve the school environment.

Sports Ambassadors | |

Who: A Young Ambassador is an outstanding and committed sports leader that takes on the additional responsibility of increasing participation, promoting PE and school sport and being a link between teachers and young people.
Purpose:

Student Ambassadors | |

Who: For learners from Year 9 who volunteered, and who were willing to be elected, were chosen to act as representatives for the Children’s Commissioner for Wales, Sally Holland, to promote young people’s rights and the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child.
Purpose: Inform other learners in the school about the Children’s Commissioner for Wales and her work. Make sure other pupils know about young people’s rights under the UNCRC.
